Introduction
This study into Facial and Body Therapy techniques has been researched using a variety of company information, books, journals, web references, workbooks and also practical salon experience of the products. The therapy techniques which I am studying include Glycolic Facial, Ionithermie, Face and Body.
Glycolic Facial
For Glycolic Facial, the products chosen have all been tested and the experience of the routine gives a better idea of the industry standard results.
Glycolic Facial products are ultimately smooth exfoliators, known as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) which are developed using acids from fruits. They link to the Methyl and Ester chemical constituents, with the former a decongestant and the latter known for calming, resurfacing and balancing the skin due to anti-inflammatory properties with a combined effect to relieve blockages, congestion and aid extraction of comedones, pustules and papules, calm reddening and tighten skin for a brighter complexion. Skin indications which can be soothed include seborrhea, aging from the sun, scarring, acne scars, melisma, inflammation, hyperpigmentation and rosacea.
Each product has a system for usage which is important to follow correct steps, due to the percentage of acids and enzymes present in the beauty solutions. The therapist should determine the skin type as part of facial analysis and decide when the skin is aging, sensitive, combination, oily, dry/dehydrated or normal.
The products which I will be looking at for Glycolic Facial is the Beauty Lab system and the CS Cosmeceuticals system and product ingredients.
These products are designed to penetrate beyond the horny layer of the skin to clear blockages with easy penetration of the skin due to the smallest molecule size with two carbon atoms from the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. The glycolic products vary in AHA strength from 20-70% professionally and on average 5% on retail products, with the balance on the skins PH being the higher percentage as a concentrated acid to lower the PH, the quicker and stronger solution needs specialist care for safety, with the gel and serum formulations having a slower penetration time for control.
The effects including desquamation through targeting the skins layers can depend on the product and routine used, and also the percentage of AHA in the products, which can be diluted and cleansed with water. The sensation from the AHA is followed with a soothing and calming effect once removed with water, and the products system reduces the tingle sensation that can be caused as part of this facial process. The treatment is completed with a UV barrier cream which is recommended to top up for 48 hours after treatment to protect pores from phototoxicity.
Glycolic Acids carry the formula C2H4O3 and can be synthetic or naturally derived. The acid is sometimes listed as Hydroacetic Acid in product ingredients, and it is also used as a food preservative within the food industry. The natural varieties mainly come from five different sources, including:
Glycolic acid, from sugar cane
Lactic acid, from milk
Citric acid, from oranges and lemons
Malic acid, from apples and pears
Tartaric acids, from grapes
Glycolic Acids are gentle and safe exfoliants that leave the skin smooth and decongested, working through the layers to brighten and plump the complexion from inside out.

Health and Safety - Sunscreen after Glycolic: Fitzpatrick Scale
After a Glycolic Facial Treatment, it is important to protect the skin from UV penetration. The Fitzpatrick Scale shows skin type and is helpful for therapists to assess the level of SPF which a client should use to protect their skin.
Glycolic Facial: Product Knowledge
The following products are skincare leaders who use quality ingredients to hydrate and nourish the skin. and slow down the aging process. Beauty lab has taken advantage of the science of skin and the glycolic facial is great for helping those with perimenopausal and menopausal skin. We lose around an extra 30% of collagen in the first five years of menopause, and that's after it starts depleting around the age of 21, and our bodies cannot make up this loss naturally.
Genetic make-up and how well you look after your health can make a difference, however using great products can support, aid and benefit skin to produce elastic and collagen, so than when natural oestrogen gets low and the skin loses suppleness to become drier, thinner and sagging, the help is there with these amazing and magical products. The diagram below shows the structure of the collagen fibres in our skin.
The following ingredients are contained in all of these brands, as they are the building blocks of our skin.
Collagen
Collagen is a major building block which is contained in our tendons, muscles, bones, ligaments and is a major feature of the integumentary system, and organs, for the skin is the body's largest organ with the most protective mass. Collagen is a protein of the body and is effectively taken as a supplement to bolster and boost the skin from the inside, however as an addition to quality products the elastin and skin support is bolstered.
Regular facial treatments with collagen will show an immediate improvement which can be maintained with regular treatments. The fruit acids in the Glycolic products reach the basement layer of the skin to restore and balance the collagen structure. The illustration below shows the difference between a healthy and a damaged collagen structure.
Retinol
The function of retinol is to speed up skin renewal, and is a product of vitamin A which is found in orange and red fruits and vegetables. Retinol based products can create irritation in the skin if they are concentrated in strength as they slough off the dead skin cells and speed up the healing process to smooth fine lines and reduce inflammation. The skin is plumped up and feels tighter after a treatment that includes retinol based products. Complementary natural oils that contain similar structures to retinol include Rosehip Seed Oil which is high in vitamin C and omega 3 fatty acids that are important for boosting circulation. Apricot, Peach, Carrot and the acids taken from peppers have varying effects that are all anti-oxidant and contain vitamins to nourish and bolster the skin.
Vitamin C (L-ascorbic Acid)
Vitamin C is a skin brightener that is useful for lifting shadows and evening out patchy skin, which is needed to help the body sustain collagen to keep healthy skin and bones. Because of the harsh environment around us, our skin absorbs free radicals and vitamin C is an effective antioxidant that helps us create a natural barrier against rogue molecules. Vitamin C is found in lots of foods to help the body revitalise from the inside out with healthy food, and products that we put on our skin are also effective when they contain vitamins as our skin absorbs nourishment externally. The following diagram illustrates how vitamin c aids collagen through keratinocytes, and blood vessels carry vitamin c through epidermal and dermal layers to support body function and plump, firm skin. The product which we look for in products is L-ascorbic Acid.
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic Acid is found in the connective tissue of the skin and eyes, which is a clear viscous substance which is naturally produced in the body. It holds up to a thousand times its weight in water and acts like a sponge to give skin a soft, plump and dewy appearance. As we age and go through menopause, the substance starts to decrease, therefore products that contain hyaluronic acid will moisturise and hydrate the skin. The dalton unit is used to measure this moisture and weight. so 50-500 dalton units for example, the highest end of the scale will have larger molecules and create more moisture. Products with over 1000 dalton molecules will have a lasting effect and hold in the skin until the next daily cleanse.
Acid based ingredients have varying functions and Hyaluronic Acid is a Hydrator. The benefits include deep moisturising of the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles, replenishing cell moisture and speeding up wound healing. In general, hyaluronic acid is safe for all skin types, but it is especially helpful for those with dry skin. However, those with rosacea or eczema may want to test patch HA to make sure it doesn't irritate skin.
Hyaluronic acid can be applied twice a day topically, at morning and at night during your skincare routine, but injected hyaluronic acid and ingestible hyaluronic acid should be administered by a doctor.
This works well in facial products with Vitamin C, vitamin B5, and glycolic acid. There are no known negative reactions with hyaluronic acid.
CS Clinical Solutions is an example of a good and affordable product which utilises the benefits of hyaluronic acid in the scientifically developed facial system.
Ioniethermie
Introduction
This study into four Facial and Body Therapy techniques has been researched using a variety of company information, books, journals, web references, workbooks and also practical salon experience of the products. The therapy techniques which I am studying include Glycolic Facial, Ionithermie, Face and Body treatments.
Ionithermie
Many treatments have been developed to shape the body over the last 40 years, but the original heralded treatment was developed in 1979 in France by Oliver Fouche, a biochemist who spent seven years testing and developing the treatment. It was launched in the UK in 1983 and is still a sought after treatment in salons, spas and cruise ships.
The Ionithermie Body Contouring system was developed to tackle cellulite found in the dermis layer of skin and target areas of toxic build up at a cellular level for soothing and smoothing, toning and shaping problem areas on the body. It is marketed as being the workless workout, and has adopted a double attack with a faradic spot reduction method where muscles that benefit from being toned and worked out anywhere on the body can be given this effective treatment. Various effects and benefits of this treatment have underlined the success and evolution, with thousands of treatments being performed all over the world, which has achieved:
1. Cellulite Reduction at the dermal layer to target hard to shift toxins, fats and acidic build up
2. Remineralisation at a cellular level
3. Sustainable and measurable results, environmentally friendly product and process
4. Scientifically and clinically proven results on inch loss from 1-8 inches
5. Skin and Muscle Tone immediately improved through spot reduction
6. Easy to transport and clean, with home products available for continuous treatment
7. Galvanic & faradic stimulation to mimic 300 sit ups, targeting hips, thighs, buttocks, tummy, arms
8. Uses Algae based products along with a thermal mask which is conductive, and uses essential minerals and natural trace elements in 2 forms of Algae for cleansing the lymphatic system and boosting the metabolism
9. All products have been tested by dermatologists for quality on an ongoing basis
10. Therapists set up costs are affordable and ongoing treatments required to build client list
11. Training is accessible and products are easy to order
12. Cost effective results for client satisfaction in comparison to injections or surgery
13. Used on over 150 cruise ships, top salons, health spas and clinics worldwide
14. Award winning - The only treatment to combine galvanic, faradic and algae science to target the release of trapped toxins, sluggish muscles and boost the metabolism for ongoing & effective results
Specifically, the treatment helps to balance cellulite, weight issues, fluid retention and gout (which is a form of arthritis). Uric acid is removed from the body to prevent crystals forming that reduce painful symptoms in joints. The treatment is designed to take place regularly and can never be an indefinite cure. Ionithermie safely draws out toxins that regularly build up in the body found in the extra-cellular matrix with PH balancing, possibly built up through various health, lifestyle, genetic or dietary issues. The iodine in the algae is very effective in balancing some endocrine issues such as underactive thyroid and boosting metabolism.
Results can be seen immediately after one treatment, however a course of 3-6 treatments is recommended to see effective results. This is due to the ongoing systems being stimulated and balanced by the treatment, just like going to the gym regularly helps to build up your muscles, the faradic works at a pulse rate of up to 300 sit ups per session.
Ionithermie has also been used to settle issues with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and the thinking is that the cellulite on the stomach can highlight areas where the body is storing toxins. As the body is organic, it creates new fat as you add weight, therefore putting pressure on the body’s organs and colon. Regular Ionithermie can dramatically ease many symptoms created by adipose tissue and cellulite at a cellular level by breaking down and removing toxins through draining the lymphatic system, reducing or even eliminating water retention through the algae and body mask and building muscle tone while calming nerves. This treatment is designed to move with the body and regularly reduce build up or flare symptoms that can cause sluggishness in the body.
There is no other system like Ionithermie that uses the combination of electrodes, electric pulses and a series of nutritional and detoxifying professional and homecare products to achieve this level of result on a cellulite smoothing treatment. The image below illustrates how the treatment is carried out using the clay and electrode methods for cellulite reduction and mucle toning. This system works in line with a healthy and balanced lifestyle for realistic expectations to be met.

CACI Body
The information below is taken from the manufacturers website.
Professional Products
CACI are the largest manufactuer of Aesthetic Equipment in the UK and supply beauty clinics and spas with machines that promote health, wellness and anti-aging systems. The products developed are targeted at the facial beauty market, however the cellulite cream is a good choice of product in body shaping. The pads on the machines use a saline solution for the faradic currents, as directed in the instruction manual.
CACI Electro Cellulite Massager (ECM)
The Electro Cellulite Massager treatment gives instant lifting and contouring on the buttocks and toning of the thighs. This treatment will improve the appearance of cellulite and break down fatty deposits. It will also stimulate circulation and lymphatic drainage, which will help to flush toxins away giving a smoother and tighter, dimple free appearance. Great as a pre-holiday body blitz.
Quantum Bust Enhancing Treatment
The CACI bust treatment will help to lift, tone and strengthen muscles around the bust area, giving an enhanced, firmer and fuller appearance.
Quantum Tummy Toning Treatment
The CACI tummy toning treatment is aimed at those who want to define their stomach muscles. Using electrically conductive pads, it will enhance and strengthen the muscles, keeping them firm and toned. It is recommended in conjunction with diet and exercise. A typical 20 minute stomach treatment is the equivalent of doing 360 perfect sit ups.
Quantum Legs and Bum Lift
This targeted body treatment will firm and tone the buttock and thigh area. It will also sculpt and contour to give a firmer, more defined appearance.
Homecare
The Electro Cellulite Massager is a popular professional and homecare product which is used to shape and smooth the skin around the buttocks and thighs, and areas which collect fatty deposits. A friend of mine used this system before the swimming suit section of the latest Mrs World to boost confidence and feel good modelling swimwear. It is a popular treatment for spas and holiday makers and is accompanied with the Cellufirm Cream to be used morning and night with an anticellulite body brush. Drinking water and exercising, resting and a balanced and varied diet are also recommended.
CoolSculpting
Freezing away your body fat is the main concept behind this treatment, the diagram below shows the effect of the procedure on the fat cells, with the main purpose being to crystalize then the body naturally eliminates the unwanted cells. Various areas can be targeted for spot reduction and a course of treatments is required for a good effect, along with a health and balanced diet and exercise. With each body care treatment, lifestyle advice is an important part of the homecare.
Professional Products
CoolSculpting use specialised machines and gel pads as the main products in the treatment. They do not disclose the ingredients, however the gel is a type of Ultrasound gel developed for laser. It is a made from a combination of water and propylene glycol, and due to being a water based product is hypoallergenic. These gels are made in a variety of ways, some contain alcohol, preservatives and even latex and spermicide.
For a Beauty setting my choice of an ultrasound gel for laser and cool sculpting based treatments would be a product developed for a Spa Setting, such as the Ultrasonic scented gel by Medvat.
Homecare
The main homecare for this treatment is to drink water and green or other herbal tea, to eat healthily and to exercise. No heat treatments for 24 hours and rest after treatment is recommended.
Body Sculpting: Effects, Benefits and Costings
Ionithermie
The cost of the machine with electrode and the full kit is £2500. They can rarely be seen to purchase on Ebay for £1500-£2000.
The basic kit for the homecare to last 60 days is £445
Each individual product for treatment

Body Sculpting: Other Market Leaders
Many beauty solutions have been developed to sculpt the body for smoother skin and a sleeker silhouette, especially as a temporary fix in preparation for a holiday or special event.
The market leaders of CACI and Cool sculpting which I have included in this report
Body Sculpting: Conclusion
Each of the 3 treatments researched in this report are significantly different in technique and achieve slightly different results to target problematic areas in a different way. To a client who may not understand how the body systems work alongside diet, lifestyle and the body's own natural organic growth and development, unrealistic expectations of a quick and permanent fix, without more invasive surgery such as liposuction, will never be met.
LED Therapy
Introduction
Our skin has the ability to absorb light and use it as a source of energy to stimulate a healing response. LED therapy uses specific colour wavelengths of light that penetrate the skin at varying depths. The light works to energise cells in the skin to produce collagen, improve elasticity and increase blood circulation and oxygen flow while releasing toxins. This treatment was originally developed over 30 years ago to help astronauts deal with skin conditions whilst at work in difficult areas, using beams to balance out skin conditions and help with regular maintenance of their complexion. It is also used by dermatologists and is effective with ranging skin conditions where it can be uncomfortable for the clients skin to be touched.
This technology stimulates the anti-aging process, helps to normalize cellular imbalance and improves skin tone and clarity. It is a natural reaction, similar to that of plant photo-synthesis which triggers the body to convert light energy to cell energy.
LED light therapy is a painless, non-invasive treatment, it's a gentle, heat free treatment that is clinically proven to be safe for all skin types, colours and conditions. There are a number of different coloured wavelengths that help the skin in positive yet different ways. LED Light therapy is an advanced technology that offers a vast quantity of benefits for the skin. The layers of the skin are made up of a high content of blood and water which allows them to easily accept light and absorb it. Once absorbed into the skin the different colours work hard offering their own unique benefits.
The following diagram show the effect of wavelength penetration on the skin through the natural colour spectrum, and the depths which colour can improve and enhance the epidermis and reach into the dermal layers. This is measured in nanometres. White light (and UV) can reach into the subcutaneous layer.
The therapist can choose to use an LED mask for even penetration of the skin or a handheld light wand which is included in the Carlton ultrapro, which can localise specific colour to specific areas to provide an individual treatment.
Some Spas have infrared saunas to enable this light to settle and balance the skin over the whole body. This can also be an effective ending of massage to soothe, relax and stimulate the body.
Specifically in facial treatment, combined with individualised products that suit the clients skin, light therapy can help to combat acne, reduce shadows, wrinkles, smooth the appearance of dry skin and create a barrier or emulsion at the end of a facial treatment, depending on the clients skin conditions and the light chosen by the therapist. there is no UV in light therapy so the melanin is not affected and there is no danger of burning the skin.
Collagen, Elastin and natural oils are stimulated by the light spectrum to stimulate the light senses of the epidermal layer and balance the skin in a sensitive way.
The colours of light therapy feature 4 distinctive colours using the Carlton Ultrapro; based on Red, Green, Yellow and Blue, all of which have their own proven unique benefits for different skin conditions so we can literally tailor this to each client. I will also look at the properties of the white light.
Blue
The Blue light therapy has been proven to have powerful anti-bacterial properties that have the ability to kill the acne causing bacteria. It prevents and treats mild to moderate acne. The Blue light also helps to purify the skin, stabilize oil glands, soothe inflammation and is very effective for hypersensitivity.
Green
The Green light is absorbed into the skin where it has a soothing calming effect. It helps to lighten hyper-pigmentation spots revealing a brighter complexion, reduce fine lines, speed up the healing process and lighten scars The calming effect also has anti-inflammatory properties that soothes the surface of the skin and helps to shrink enlarged pores.
Red
The Red LED Light has the ability to reach down into all the layers of the skin where it rejuvenates, stimulates collagen production, prompts cellular repair, and increases circulation promoting a more vibrant and youthful complexion. Best for fine lines and will also help to reduce large pores
Yellow
The Yellow light reduces the appearance of redness, swelling, and inflammation. This colour is beneficial for rosacea and treating burns such as sunburns, it helps to revitalize and re-energise the skin and has been shown to bring vitality to dull and lifeless complexions.
White
The Infrared light is invisible to the naked eye but penetrates deeper than any other colour in the spectrum. Infrared light combats the signs of aging, replenishes dermal and epidermal cells, and speeds up the healing process. It is used to de-age the skin and accelerate the healing of wounds, cuts, and damage.
LED Light therapy offers a powerful yet gentle means for obtaining more beautiful skin. It gives you the opportunity to treat an array of skin concerns without chemicals, drugs, or invasive measures. The skin responds quickly and very positively to the different colours in the spectrum.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments you will need can vary with skin type and condition. One session is an ideal ‘pick me up’ for the skin. A course of treatment is recommended for long term results.
Contrasting Masks to Wands in Light Therapy
There are many masks on the market, some are single purpose using just one colour. However an award winning quality mask which has achieved great results and great reviews is the MK Golden mask, which would be my first choice if money was not an option. It is a comfortable pampering essential skincare piece of equipment that is luxurious but in the longterm could save money on future treatments through home treatments. the salon masks have deeper penetration and are often used for less time than the home based products, however a quality product will achieve better results and last. A light therapy wand would be far trickier to use at home and the preparation is slightly more complicated.
How long will it take to see results?
Each person responds at different speeds to the Skin LED System. Some much quicker than others, depending on their current physical conditions, age, skin condition, diet, alcohol consumption, smoking habits, etc. That said most people see initial results in 4 to 8 weeks, but many see results in as short as 1 to 3 weeks. A few people will take as long as 9 to 11 weeks, but this is more unusual. The most important things to remember are:
1) This technology works, so it’s just a matter of “ How long will it take?”
and
2) It is very important to take a picture before you start using LED Light Therapy so that you can see the difference clearly in the weeks to come.
Is Photo Rejuvenation or LED Light safe and is it painful?
Yes it is safe and completely non-invasive so does not cause any pain. It has been used for years in numerous medical procedures, medical spas, dermatologists and consumers around the world.
Can I use skin care products in conjunction with my LED Light Therapy?
Yes, in fact your results will happen faster and be more dramatic if used with a high quality moisturising skin care product.
What about using acne products with LED Light Therapy and contraindications?
Yes, your results will definitely be faster if you use a high quality topical acne product. An acne product should not be used prior to using your Skin LED, but can be applied afterwards.
For two weeks prior to a light therapy session, you may need to avoid retinols and other skin care products that thin your skin.
If you’re on any anti-inflammatory drugs, ask your therapist or dermatologist if you should discontinue them with doctors advice. Avoid tanning beds and prolonged, unprotected sun exposure in the days just before your treatment appointments.
Blue and red light therapy sessions last 15 to 30 minutes each. During the session, you’ll lay down or put your head in a special device meant to keep your face still.
A trained light therapy professional — usually a nurse or dermatologist — will apply pulses from a light therapy device to different parts of your face, working in a circular fashion. After several repetitions of this process, the treatment is complete.Afterlight therapy, your treated skin may be pink or red. There might be some mild skin peeling from the treated area. Your skin may be more sensitive, and you might need to skip your typical skin care regimen for a few days afterwards, especially scrubs, exfoliants, and topical vitamin A. Always follow the therapist's advice.
Conclusion
While dermatologists recommend you wear sunscreen every day, you’ll need to be especially vigilant with sunblock while your skin recovers, depending on the type of treatment and condition of your skin. Special Care should always be taken to provide the right ongoing treatment for the best results, and follow the therapist homecare advice on skin care and the daily routine with the correct products.
However visible light therapy isn’t effective for comedones and milia (whiteheads, blackheads, or nodular acne). It works best for people who have mild to moderate acne and papules or pustules.
Light therapy rarely involves a single treatment. Several rounds of treatments, typically one per week, over the course of four to six weeks, is usually recommended to start with. After that, the effects of the treatment may need to be maintained by occasional follow-up treatments every three months or so. Many clients choose to purchase their own LED masks and continue with salon based wand treatments for better results.
